The expanse of space on an urban rooftop is a respite from the frenzy of the city below. Certain evenings, my parents and I head up to the top of our apartment building and watch the city from a different perspective. Although at times overwhelming, the city here has been encapsulated as a reflection within the bounds of a glass. From here, focus shifts to my dad’s frontal portrait, his eyes turned toward the viewer in a look of curiosity. To replicate the kinetic energy of the city, I used impasto brush strokes. I also chose to paint with muted colors to convey the calmness that arrives as the sun sets.
