After taking a few wrong turns during an outing in Hawaii, we came across an abandoned sugar mill. I was fascinated by the interplay between the natural and human-built worlds. Though nature has “won” out in this scene, in reality, man-made structures and the natural world often go hand-in-hand: nature can never be completely blotted out no matter how hard we try. A weed will always find a way to grow and a forest will reclaim a disused sugar mill. By using oil paint, I was able to simulate the textured appearance of the trees and decrepit rusty panels of the worn out buildings.
